Ken Rebel may only be 18 years old, but he’s already beginning to make a name for himself in the US and is definitely an artist to watch out for in the coming months. His latest visual for “Disrespectful” pushes the boundaries of current rap, while proving that he doesn’t take himself too seriously.
Rapping over a trippy beat, Kenny is assertive yet playful in his approach. In keeping with the title of the track, his lyrics are honest and slightly arrogant, but it’s difficult to ignore the likeable qualities he also possesses. The video reflects the words of the song well and shows the young rapper and his friends enjoying themselves at a typical house party, fuelled by alcohol and surrounded by girls.
Half way through the track, everything slows down and a story begins. In this section (entitled “The Set-Up”) Kenny is shown being kidnapped and taken to a remote location where he is beaten up by an enemy and left lying on the grass. The blatant use of ketchup to represent blood on his face just adds to the humorous personality that comes across in his music and also shows he isn’t afraid to laugh at himself – something that many rappers forget to do these days.
Recently mentioned in Complex magazine’s ’25 under 25: The Young Leaders of Style’ for his ahead-of-the-trend dress sense and quirky taste in fashion, Ken Rebel has secured fame on Tumblr and managed to create a buzz that is sure to stand him in good stead when he eventually decides to drop his first official mixtape.
